Is the Gym Open on Martin Luther King Jr. Day? Planet Fitness, Equinox, L.A. Fitness Hours

Most gyms will be open on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The holiday to honor the civil rights leader takes place on the third Monday of January and this year falls on January 18.

Some gyms may be operating on a reduced schedule on the federal holiday and may also be offering modified services because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Contact your local branch before visiting to confirm the exact hours of operation and any COVID-19 safety measures.

Here we look at the Martin Luther King Jr. Day hours at some fitness chains across the country.

Planet Fitness

Most Planet Fitness gyms are open every day, including on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Most locations are open 24 hours a day, but contact your nearest venue to confirm timings.

Several COVID-19 guidelines have been implemented at Planet Fitness gyms, such as a requirement for all members to wear a face covering. The gym’s Crowd Meter app can be accessed to view how many people are at a local branch before you visit.

Equinox

Contact your local Equinox branch to confirm the exact hours for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The company has also imposed COVID-19 measures, including temperature checks before entry, mask requirements and advanced booking for all sessions using the Equinox app.

“Touch-free temperature checks will be required upon each entry to the club. If your temperature is higher than 100.4 degrees, or local guidelines, you will not be permitted to access the club for three days from the time of your reading,” the company said.

Some locations require members to wear a mask at all times, while other branches allow them to remove their masks when exercising.

L.A. Fitness

Most L.A. Fitness gyms are open on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, but some have yet to resume operations in the pandemic.

“Happy New Year! If your club is open: Thank you for being a member and dedicating yourself to being healthy this year! If your club is closed: We look forward to our doors opening again as soon as we are permitted and providing you with a safe place to exercise again,” the company tweeted in early January.

Typical hours of operation range from 5 a.m to 10 or 11 p.m. local time during the week and from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the weekend.
