“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” Twitter Reactions

“A-one, a-two, a-you know what to do!”

This past friday, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom started streaming on Netflix and it has taken the world by storm.

If you are unfamiliar with this show-stopping film, let me catch you up. This is the film adaption of August Wilson’s play of the same name, centered around Blues singer Ma Rainey (Viola Davis), her ambitious trumpet player Levee (Chadwick Boseman), and the exploitative nature of the music industry.

This film has only been streaming for a weekend, yet, the Twitter-verse has spoken and they have a lot to say. The reactions are hilarious, heartbreaking, and perfectly encompass what we were all feeling while watching. Here are some of the best ones:

Things I’m going to start doing now that I’ve seen Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom:

-Speak in the third person, always.
-Say “I ain’t studying you” instead of “I don’t care what you say.”
-Refer to my backside as my “Big Black Bottom”.
-Own my power fully and completely.

#MaRainey So the real Ma Rainey just walked around sweaty all the time? Because why they got Viola looking like this?

My boys will now and forever count the way Cutler counts in:

“One, two, you know what to do.”

Irvin: Will you sing Levee’s version of Black Bottom?
