The Diana we’ll never forget: princess, humanitarian, icon

The night Diana died, she was in Paris, accompanied by her companion, Dodi Fayed, a bodyguard, Trevor Rees-Jones, and Henri Paul, head of security at the Ritz Hotel. The car, pursued by photographers, slammed into a pillar in the Alma underpass (pictured), fatally injuring Diana, Fayed, and Paul. While many blamed the paparazzi for the crash, a coroner’s inquest later heard that Paul, who was driving, had a blood alcohol level three times the legal limit. The photographers were publicly criticized for their behaviour, including by Prince Harry, but they weren’t charged following the 2008 inquest.
